Lucignano (AR)  is one of the most beautiful and best preserved of all Tuscany. On top of a hill overlooking the Val di Chiana, and because of its elliptical plan with concentric rings, it is considered one of the most extraordinary examples of medieval town planning in Tuscany. The city walls were erected by the Sienesi in 1371, even if this layout partially follows a 13th – 14th century urban structure; the three city gates are still: Porta S. Giovanni (known also as porta di sotto), Porta S. Giusto (or porta di sopra) and Porta Murata (named this way because it was probably walled up around 1500). Palazzo Pretorio (the seat of local government and the City Museum) rises close to the Monumental Complex of San Francesco, in the geometric centre of Lucignano, the building main facade overlooks the enchanting Piazza del Tribunale.

Lucignano is still completely enclosed within its walls and stroll through its streets is like diving into a past that no longer exists but that surrounds us still with old stone houses , wells, arches, old ladies sitting in a circle talking and embroider. And just outside the walls, the olive trees are colored silver at the slightest breeze..

Under the rule of the House of Medici, the great urban interventions were begun, besides the Fortress were also built the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Querce (attributed to the Vasari), the Convent of the Capucines (around 1580), the Church of the Misericordia (1582) and the amazing Latin cross-shaped Collegiate Church of San Michele Arcangelo.

Given the curious legend of the Tree of love that characterizes this place, getting married in Lucignano means to do it in the most important places of the ancient village as the Council Chamber of the ancient Town Hall, the walls covered in frescoes. Inside the piccoloMuseo Hall, the new couple will promise everlasting love in front of the magnificent Tree of Love, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.

However if you do not intend to get married, Lucignano is the ideal place for unforgettable excursions, an essential destination for those who want to expand their knowledge of the immediate surroundings of Arezzo, Siena and Florence.

Expected days of a nice clear sky in the coming days and one of our proposals for trips out of town is a few kilometers from Florence, among the rolling hills, the tall cypress trees, the backdrop of mountain peaks and passes,   the territory of  Mugello area. Silent waters, delightful countryside, friendly people, quiet and hard-working, wholesome food, the places of the Medici, the historical villas, all just outside Florence. History, culture, quality of services, in a renewed relationship with nature, this is what gives the Mugello that was a land much loved by the Medici family, which has its roots in Campiano, a town of Barberino di Mugello.
The Medici and Lorenzo the Magnificent in Mugello have left many signs of a power that united economic expansion and political artistic expression more innovative. iò was not only the result of enlightened patronage, but took place in a cultural context so widespread and acquired, to show traces of the same sensitivity, together aesthetic and rational, even in the breakdown of taste geometry of fields and woods, into the sewage water rationally , in constructive ways and proportions of certain houses, villas and churches, in the harmonic distribution of settlements. The itinerary below is developed in Mugello along roads leading to the towns of Money, San Piero a Sieve, Scarperia and Barberino di Mugello.
From Florence, take the Via Bolognese and, before you reach the Mugello, you reach Pratolino.
Here we find the first major track left by the sixteenth-century Medici at the time of the Granducato  the Medici Park of Pratolino (formerly Villa Demidoff). Back on Via Bolognese, through the town Vaglia, you reach the Mugello territory. Before turning to San Piero a Sieve, it turns right towards Barberino. From here, through a wide country road that climbs to the top of a hill, you will reach the Castle of Trebbio  .  From here, returning on the Via Bolognese and continuing for Barberino di Mugello, you find Villa Cafaggiolo stands backed by hills and in the middle of fields and meadows declined to east toward the river Sieve. Near  Villa Cafaggiolo is the Convent of Bosco ai Frati, which is reached after a few kilometers, following the signs to Panna - Galliano. Da Bosco ai Frati , returns to San Piero a Sieve and from there to Scarperia, where miss a visit to the Palazzo dei Vicari .Finally, from Scarperia, returns to San Piero a Sieve, to our last stop, where you can admire the Medici Fortress St. Martin walking around its ancient walls.  In this area you’ll be able to visit some of the best wineries producing this great wine, the Brunello. Another attraction here is the abbey of Sant’Antimo built in the XII century. The next stop is Pienza. This tiny medieval village is famous because it’s considered, by the historians, the first example of renaissance town. It’s also very well known for the production of Pecorino cheese. You will enjoy, even from here, a breathtaking view on the Orcia valley.

Montepulciano is the last stop. Another stunning medieval village built on top of a hill. You’ll love walking through the tiny streets in the centre of town and you’ll be able to taste, here, another very good red wine of Tuscany: the Nobile of Montepulciano.

This is a very flexible tour. The driver, in fact, will ask you immediately which are your interests. If you want to have a wine tasting, if you want to visit a cellar, if you want to spend more time to visit the medieval villages and so on. You’ll adjust the tour with your driver immediately when you will meet him in the morning but always in the respect of the time and the driving distances.
If you want to visit a cellar and having a wine tasting he will immediately call a winery to make a reservation for you in one of the best wineries where you’ ll surely spend a lovely time. It’ s possible to skip a village and spend more time in another one, or visit two wineries or even going only through the wineries. The most of people, anyway, choose to visit a couple of medieval villages and having lunch and Brunello wine tasting ia a winery in Montalcino.

Un inedito negli anni giovanili del celebre cantante inglese.
Bowie l'incompreso.
Quel '69 a Monsummano.

Cantò quello che sarebbe divenuto un suo brano famoso, ma fu ignorato dalla critica di Andrea Rocchi

MONSUMMANO Un paio di jeans scuri, una maglietta bianca, una chitarra acustica sulle spalle: lo ricordano così mentre dalla piazza Giusti di Monsummano andava a piedi, sotto il sole, fino al calzaturificio Fiorella, al confine con Pieve a Nievole. Incuriosiva la sua andatura dinoccolata, il suo sguardo comunicativo. Si vedeva lontano un miglio che era straniero. Questo ragazzo acqua e sapone di Brixton, quartiere povero nel sud-ovest di Londra, che non spiccicava una parola in italiano, si chiamava David Robert Jones. Ma il suo nome d'arte era David Bowie. Era arrivato a Monsummano per partecipare al primo Festival Internazionale, un concorso canoro organizzato dal circolo culturale "Giuseppe Giusti" e dall'Oscar di Malta, organizzazione che aveva già allestito festival musicali nell'isola. A Londra, 20 giorni prima, aveva appena concluso la registrazione ufficiale di "Space Oddity", un Lp che s'ispirava al capolavoro di Stanley Kubrick "2OO1 odissea nello spazio". Il disco era stato accolto tiepidamente dagli inglesi. Bowie aveva 22 anni. Era appena agli inizi. Di Monsummano non sapeva nulla, solo che era la città che aveva dato i natali a Ivo Livi (in arte Yves Montand) e che qui si fabbricavano scarpe. Buone scarpe. Fu ingaggiato dai Maltesi - per cui aveva cantato pochi mesi prima - che ancora suonava nei locali, in piena epoca della contestazione giovanile. Erano gli anni in cui lavorava, non senza difficoltà, per la casa discografica Kenneth Pitt ltd di Londra. Sperimentava canzoni. Timido, un po' spaesato, arrivò nella città delle scarpe, nell'estate torrida del '69 per presentare "Ragazzo solo, ragazza sola", la versione in italiano di "Space Oddity". Gli organizzatori del concorso di lui sapevano pochissimo. Era uno come tanti. Un ribelle inglese, un "po' strano", con una curiosa voce metallica. Gli affidarono, come sponsor, il calzaturificio Fiorella (erano gli anni in cui il mercato delle scarpe conosceva un periodo florido). L'azienda gli offrì il soggiorno, e lui diventò per tre giorni il paladino della calzatura e l'idolo delle ragazzine del posto che gli scodinzolavano intorno ogni qualvolta si spostava dallo chalet davanti al municipio (dove si cantava) per recarsi in albergo. Non sapevano chi fosse, eppure era un personaggio che incuriosiva da morire. Il festival, quell'estate, era presentato da Daniele Piombi. C'erano 15 cantanti, tutti molto giovani e agli albori della carriera. Tra questi l'argentino Ricardo Ceratto, la francese Sabrina, Franco Valori che rappresentava i nostri colori, la spagnola Maria del Carmen, più conosciuta come Cristina. Fu proprio questa giovanissima catalana, a sorpresa, a conquistare il trofeo, quel sabato 3 agosto del '69. David Bowie si piazzò secondo, ricevendo però il "Disco d'oro", un riconoscimento destinato ai talenti emergenti. Cantò in un italiano un po' rabberciato il pezzo intitolato "Ragazzo Solo, Ragazza Sola". Racconta Cristina Magrini, figlia di Alfio (l'organizzatore del concorso, un radiologo con il pallino del teatro e dello spettacolo), che il testo assomigliava molto a quello che negli anni successivi sarebbe diventato un grandissimo successo: "Space Oddity". Ne era, del resto, la versione italiana anche se molto arrangiata. La gente applaudì, ma la critica praticamente lo ignorò. Eppure, solo 4 anni dopo quel concorso, David Bowie diventò l'idolo musicale di mezzo mondo. La sua popolarità esplose letteralmente con "Ziggy Stardust" e col Tour in cui Bowie si presentò nei panni di un androgino spaziale, vestito di tute luccicanti e truccatissimo in volto. Cantava e recitava sul palco (era stato allievo di Lindsay Kemp): una figura trasgressiva ed una voce che conquistarono presto i giovani di tutto il mondo. Oggi a Monsummano, Bowie rimane il ragazzino con la chitarra che faceva chilometri a piedi per andare al Calzaturificio Fiorella. Nessun autografo, poche foto. Solo la gioia di dire: "L'abbiamo conosciuto".
